District Primary Purpose:                

To assist and promote La Joya ISD in implementing a rigorous curriculum/instructional program that supports student success and achievement.

 

Department Primary Purpose:         

The Lifeguard program is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to emergencies and to provide care for injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel arrive and take over.

 

Qualifications:                                              

 

Education/Certification:          

High School Diploma preferred

Current and valid American Red Cross Certificate (ARC)

First Aid and Cardio Pulmonary Rescuer Certificate (CPR)   

Ability to pass pre-employment practical skills test in the water (preferred)

2 Years experience teaching swim lessons or coaching swim teams  

2 Years lifeguard experience preferred

Flexible schedule required

 

Knowledge/Skills:               

Knowledge of pool equipment and maintenance

Knowledge of lifesaving methods and procedures, including first aid and   standard resuscitation measures

Knowledge of rules and regulations governing conduct of the public at pools

Knowledge of swimming pool sanitation and chlorination systems

Skilled in the application of lifesaving techniques

Skilled in swimming

Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies

Ability to perform rescue actions, administer first aid and CPR     

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties: 

 

  1. Ensure the health and safety of the patrons in the Water Park. This includes appropriate and efficient emergency response when needed.

 

  1. To enforce the pool rules in and appropriate, fair and equitable manner and explain the rationale for the rule(s) when needed.

 

  1. Assist the patrons as needed, but without compromising the safety others using the Natatorium.

 

  1. Adhere to the policies and procedures set forth in the Sports and Learning Complex Staff Manual.

 

  1. Attend all staff and evaluation meeting as requested.

 

  1. Be on time and cover all assigned hours.

 

  1. If unable to work, the lifeguard must contact Head Lifeguard with at least 4 hours notice.

 

  1. Maintain an appropriate level of fitness in order to competently perform all job related tasks. Swimming 1000 yards per week is required.

 

  1. Attend to the cleanliness of the Water Park and its equipment.

 

  1. Present professional appearance and attitude at all times, and maintain a high standard of customer service.

 

  1. Monitor activities in the Water Park to prevent accidents.

 

  1. Maintain order in the Water Park adjoining areas.

 

  1. Inspect facilities for cleanliness; complete general pool cleaning and maintenance duties.

 

  1. Responsible for the availability and safekeeping of emergency equipment (rescue tubes, backboard, sings and other equipment).

 

  1. Cooperate with co-worker in a professional manner.

 

  1. Perform other related duties as assigned.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use written and oral communication skills; observe and interpret people and situations; analyze and solve problems; perform work on multiple, concurrent tasks with constant interruptions; work under intensive pressure and deadlines; interact with the public, management and representatives of other governmental agencies and deal with distressed, dissatisfied or abusive individuals

 

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

While performing the duties of this job, an employee is frequently required to run, swim, paddle and walk long distances; stand and sit for long periods; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, bend, crouch or crawl; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear both in person from close and long distances and by phone or radio; use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate lifesaving equipment; and drive a vehicle. The employee regularly lifts, pushes or pulls persons or equipment over 100 pounds. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades; depth perception, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
