District Primary Purpose:  To assist and promote La Joya ISD in implementing a rigorous curriculum/instructional program that supports student success and achievement.

 

Department Primary Purpose:  The Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licenses Specialist is School Psychology (LSSP) will provide counseling and behavior supports for students eligible for special education services based on the student’s individual educational plan. The LPC/LSSP will conduct assessments, establish/implement goals, monitor progress, develop behavior plans and provide ongoing support to students and staff.

 

Qualifications:                                              

 

Education/Certification:        Master’s of Guidance and Counseling, preferred

                                                Master’s Degree as a Licensed Professional Counselor or

                                                Master’s Degree as a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology

Hold a license of (LPC) or (LSSP) in the State of Texas

 

Experience:                            Three years successful experience as a special education teacher, preferred

                                                Two years successful experience as a school counselor, preferred  

                                                Successful experience in developing and implementing counseling evaluations/goals, functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans for students with disabilities.

 

Knowledge/Skills: Successful experience in developing and implementing counseling evaluations/goals, functional behavior assessments, behavior intervention plans for students with disabilities and participating as a member of the admission review and dismissal committee. Must be able to communicate in English and Spanish. 

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties: 

 

  1. Provide individual/group counseling to students under the special education program with an individualized educational plan. 
  1. Develop and present Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) for students with an individual educational plan. 
  1. Develop and present student counseling evaluation based on student educational records, informal/formal assessment, parent information and other data, as needed. 
  1. Develop structured, goal oriented counseling sessions in response to identified needs of students. Themes may include academic skill building, social skill development, organization, conflict resolution, family issues, making healthy choices, academic skill building and/or other. 
  1. Develop, implement, and monitor progress of counseling and behavior goals specific to the student’s individualized educational plan. 
  1. Maintain and train on requirements designated by state and federal law specific to positive behavior intervention for student restraint and time-out procedures. 
  1. Consult with other District professionals, as needed, in the development of FBA/BIP, crisis plan, and/or other student needs. 
  1. Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team at the campus and district level. 
  1. Ability to work independently, display self-motivation, demonstrate organizational skills and conduct themselves in a professional manner. 
  1. Collaborate with school counselors and licensed professional counselors (district and outside agencies) to ensure coordination of supports in meeting the individual needs of the student. 
  1. Maintain assessment record, service logs, SHARs billing and case management folders on assigned students. 
  1. Provide secondary support to campus counselors in crisis management situations. 
  1. Conduct home visits as part of consultation, assessment, therapy and/or other reasons, as necessary. 
  1. Engage parents in the process of “student social/emotional intervention” and empower them by providing skills and strategies to support their child. 
  1. Provide training and support in special education related topics such as diagnosis, implications of disability, meeting social/emotional needs, behavior management, resources and/or other topics, as needed to individual staff, parents, campus, district, and/or community. This may include in-home parent training. 
  1. Engage and participate in on-going professional development to increase knowledge and positive behavior supports, mental health, assessment, crisis management, and other areas as needed. 
  1. Maintain confidentiality of all student information and all aspects of the special education department. 
  1. Abide by all state, local, and federal laws, as applicable to LPCs working in the school setting and impacting student academic achievement. 
  1. Perform other duties pertaining to special education as assigned by immediate supervisor and/or Special Education Director.

Mental Demands:    

Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy, procedures, and data; maintain emotional control under stress.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Lifting materials, supplies and frequent travel. Moderate amount of time on computer, occasional prolonged and irregular hours. Works with frequent interruptions, change in work environment, and/or under specific circumstances will provide physical restraint of students when in danger of causing harm to themselves or others.
